Amazon's Zoox has officially launched its highly anticipated robotaxi service in Las Vegas, offering free rides to the public.
The service, which has been in development for several years, will initially provide rides to five designated locations in the entertainment district, including major hotels and resorts.
The robotaxis, which are designed to carry up to four passengers, will travel a maximum distance of about three miles.
This public debut follows two years of testing the driverless vehicles with employees, their friends, and family members.
The decision to offer free rides for the first few months is intended to promote the service and build public confidence in the safety of driverless vehicles.
The launch marks a significant step for Zoox and for the broader autonomous vehicle industry, bringing the technology from the testing phase to a public-facing service in a major city.
The success of the service in Las Vegas could pave the way for a wider rollout in other cities across the US.
