George Russell Dismisses Ferrari After Securing Dramatic Austrian GP Pole Position

George Russell secured a stunning pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix in a qualifying session that ended in controversy, a rival's crash, and the Mercedes driver claiming the front of the grid despite easing off the throttle in the final sector.

The session was disrupted when Max Verstappen crashed his Red Bull during Q3, raising single waved yellow flags in the affected zone.

Russell lifted through the flagged sector in response โ€” briefly raising the prospect that his lap time might be deleted โ€” but the stewards confirmed that only single rather than double-waved flags were displayed, meaning his caution was appropriate but his lap time stood.

Russell will therefore start Sunday's race from pole, with team-mate Kimi Antonelli alongside him on the front row.

Championship leader Lando Norris, who misread the flags as double-waved and abandoned his final lap entirely, will start from fourth.

Russell was composed in his assessment of the qualifying result, pointedly noting that Verstappen's crash and Antonelli's conservative response were the decisive factors rather than any meaningful pace advantage over the red cars.

"My rivals were the guys who were up front โ€” Max was out, and Kimi backed off," Russell said.

"I think I would have been three or four tenths further ahead, but those guys were nip and tuck with me.

The three of us clearly had a step more than the Ferraris and McLarens." The result reinforces Mercedes' growing competitiveness and suggests a tight battle for race victory in Spielberg.
