Sleep Expert Warns Against Putting Pyjamas in Freezer to Cool Down in Hot Weather

British households have been warned against following a widely shared tip of putting pyjamas in the freezer to keep cool during hot weather, with a prominent sleep expert saying the hack can actually make you feel warmer in bed rather than cooler.

James Wilson, known professionally as The Sleep Geek, issued the caution as temperatures across the UK rose this week, prompting many people to search online for ways to stay comfortable at night.

Wilson said that while the advice sounds logical, freezing pyjamas does not work as intended.

Cold fabric placed against warm skin heats up almost immediately, and the brief cooling sensation is offset by the body's response to the warming process, which can lead to increased discomfort and disrupted sleep.

He urged people to focus on proven cooling strategies instead.

These include keeping bedroom windows open where possible to create cross-ventilation, using lightweight natural-fibre bedding such as cotton or linen, closing blinds during the hottest part of the day to prevent rooms from overheating, and taking a warm โ€” not cold โ€” shower before bed, which prompts the body's core temperature to drop as it cools down.

The Met Office meanwhile forecast unsettled conditions from Tuesday 30 June, with spells of rain, showers and possible thundery outbreaks affecting much of the UK before a potentially drier start to July for many regions.

The northwest may continue to see rain and strong winds at times.
