Anglian Water, a major water supplier in the UK, has reached an agreement with the environmental regulator to avoid a significant fine for sewage spills.
Instead of paying a £57.1 million fine to the Treasury, the company has agreed to a more substantial investment of £62.8 million to help stop future spills and fund environmental projects.
The money will come from the company's shareholders.
According to Mark Thurston, the chief executive officer for Anglian Water, the company will focus on minimizing spills from storm overflows and ensuring that its assets are legally compliant.
He acknowledged that achieving a significant reduction in spills will take time and investment, but stated that the company is making good progress.
As part of its commitment, Anglian Water has set aside £1 billion to be spent by 2030 on various projects, including storm tanks, upgraded monitoring, nature-based solutions like wetlands, and sustainable drainage systems, with the goal of halving the number of spills.
This move is a positive step towards addressing the issue of sewage pollution and investing in long-term environmental solutions.
