On September 16, 2025, a 29-year-old hiker was attacked by a suspected grizzly bear on Yellowstone National Park’s Turbid Lake Trail, sustaining serious but non-life-threatening chest and arm injuries.
He deployed repellent during the encounter, 2.5 miles into the backcountry, and was airlifted to a hospital after medics assisted.
The trail remains closed.
The bear won’t be relocated or killed, as it was a surprise encounter, not unnatural behavior.
DNA tests will confirm if it was a grizzly or black bear.
This marks Yellowstone’s first bear attack since 2021; a woman was killed nearby in 2023.
Grizzly populations have rebounded to 2,000 in the lower 48 states.
