Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed his immense admiration for Viktor Gyokeres’s resilience and attitude following the forward’s tough afternoon during the Gunners' dramatic 2-1 victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday.
The Sweden international was involved in a key moment when he initially won a penalty after being brought down by Magpies goalkeeper Nick Pope, only for the decision to be controversially overturned by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Despite battling against Newcastle’s physical defenders and ultimately failing to find the back of the net, Arteta was left deeply impressed.
“I loved it, I absolutely loved how he took it,” the manager stated, noting that Gyokeres ‘went on board’ and ‘there wasn’t a single moment where he showed frustration.’ Arteta revealed he told the striker that he would face decisions both for and against him, and that he would frequently be surrounded by multiple opponents, but praised his reaction nevertheless.
The manager added, “I loved his reaction a lot.
The way he handled the situation emotionally and also because he was involved in a lot of dangerous moments.” Arteta lamented that it was a 'pity he didn’t score a goal, because in my opinion he fully deserved it.' The manager will be hoping Gyokeres can replicate those strong qualities when Arsenal host Olympiacos in their second Champions League group game on Wednesday night.
