Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to win his second US Open title and reclaim the world number one ranking.
The match was delayed by 30 minutes due to enhanced security measures for Donald Trump's attendance at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sinner, who had held the top ranking since June 2024, admitted he needs to become more unpredictable on court to better compete against Alcaraz, even if it means risking losing matches in the short term.
The Spaniard's victory marked his sixth win in seven meetings against Sinner, with the only exception being Sinner's Wimbledon final victory.
Alcaraz explained how his training regime and performance of fiery serves and excellent stroke play ensured he came out on top.
The win returns Alcaraz to the top spot for the first time since September 2023, making him the man to chase in the rankings as the tennis season continues.
