Chelsea show interest in Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka

Chelsea have shown strong interest in signing Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka in a surprise move that would reunite him with manager Xabi Alonso. The 33-year-old Switzerland international, currently at the World Cup, was outstanding for the Black Cats last season as they made a stunning return to the Premier League, finishing seventh and qualifying for the Europa League.
Xhaka played under Alonso during Bayer Leverkusen's historic Bundesliga-winning campaign in 2023-24, when the club won the title without losing a single league match and also lifted the DFB-Pokal. The midfielder made 34 appearances for Sunderland last season as captain and has established himself as a key figure following his arrival from Leverkusen.
Chelsea's interest represents a marked departure from their recent transfer policy of signing young players. However, the club are conscious of Xhaka's age as they contemplate a bid.
Chelsea lodged an opening offer of £8million for Xhaka, but Sunderland swiftly rejected it, with sources claiming the Black Cats were left furious at what they considered an insulting proposal. Sunderland have maintained a firm stance that Xhaka is not for sale at any price this summer, insisting he will not be allowed to leave despite interest from west London.
Xhaka still has two years remaining on his contract, which expires in June 2028. Despite Sunderland's resistance, it is understood the midfielder is open to reuniting with Alonso at Stamford Bridge. Reports suggest Xhaka has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea, though negotiations between the clubs remain deadlocked over valuation.
Last month, Xhaka stated he was happy in Sunderland with his family and was not thinking about a transfer. However, Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus liked an Instagram post from Xhaka, which some supporters interpreted as a positive signal regarding his future. It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will return with an improved offer.
