The Spanish manager has been keen to sign Chalobah for more than six months, viewing his acquisition as a major statement of intent for the Italian outfit. Fabregas has been keen to bolster his defensive line with experienced players who possess the technical quality to build from the back, and Chalobah fits that profile perfectly. Despite interest from other clubs across Europe and within the Premier League, the prospect of playing Champions League football at Como proved the most enticing option for the defender as he looks to establish himself as a starter in one of Europe's top five leagues.

The sale of Chalobah represents a sizeable financial windfall for Chelsea's summer transfer business. Because the defender came through Chelsea's academy system, this transfer will be listed as pure profit under Financial Fair Play regulations, giving Xabi Alonso and the club's transfer team a 25.7 million boost to their FFP restrictions. This boost can then be put towards more transfer additions this summer, providing Alonso with increased flexibility during what has already been an active window.
