Viktor Gyokeres Arsenal swap deal dilemma and the £140m Julian Alvarez loophole

Arsenal face a significant transfer puzzle pursuing Julian Alvarez, with the Argentinian striker emerging as a target despite formidable obstacles. Mikel Arteta is a huge fan, but acquiring him from Atletico Madrid proves complicated by both the club's resistance and Alvarez's preference for Barcelona.

Atletico Madrid have made their position clear. Club CEO Miguel Angel Gil released a video statement declaring: "My opinion is clear the club's will is clear we have made it clear to the player the agent the president of Barca. I have no doubt that Atletico is the place in the world for Julian and that Julian is the perfect striker for Atletico de Madrid. We want to continue counting on him."

A potential solution exists through a swap deal involving Viktor Gyokeres. Without another player involved, Arsenal would need to break the British transfer record of £125 million. Through a swap, if Gyokeres is valued at approximately £80 million—up from the £64 million Arsenal paid last summer—Atletico would sign him. Arsenal would then pay £140 million for Alvarez, making the deal effectively Gyokeres plus £60 million.

Such arrangements have precedent. In January 2018, Alexis Sanchez joined Manchester United with Henrikh Mkhitaryan going in the other direction, with approximately £30 million exchanged each way.

Atletico supporters appear receptive. A poll shows 91 per cent of fans would back an 85 million-plus-Gyokeres deal. Gyokeres himself has faced criticism. Paul Merson suggested players were reluctant to give him the ball. Ray Parlour argued Alvarez could work alongside the Swedish striker, saying: "I think it's a no-brainer. There aren't a lot of great strikers around. He's hard-working, a good finisher and quick."
