Aston Villa braced for another Arsenal bid but bumper new contract could block major transfer

Arsenal are preparing a summer bid for Aston Villa and England defender Ezri Konsa, though the Midlands club are braced for the move and could prevent the transfer by offering him a new deal.
Konsa, 28, has been with Villa since joining from Brentford in 2019 and has two years remaining on his contract at Villa Park, with his existing deal running until 2028. The centre-back has been a standout performer for Villa, leading to him being a regular for the Three Lions under Thomas Tuchel. He was instrumental in helping the club lift the Europa League trophy last season as well as securing fourth place to earn Champions League qualification.
However, reports indicate that Arsenal and Villa's valuations of the England international are significantly apart. The speculation surrounding a possible transfer for Konsa follows news that Arsenal defender William Saliba suffered a significant injury setback during the World Cup. Saliba was taken off during France's semi-final loss to Spain due to a back injury with reports indicating that the 25-year-old may be sidelined for several months and could require surgery.
Konsa's versatility across the backline would be crucial for Arsenal this term given the club's history of injuries at right-back and centre-back. The 50m-rated defender can play at centre-back and right-back.
Konsa has played a total of 286 times for Villa scoring 12 goals. Last season saw him make 48 appearances in all competitions occasionally wearing the captain's armband. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his defensive options, and Konsa has emerged as a priority target alongside fellow Villa player Morgan Rogers.
Despite Arsenal's interest, Villa are expected to drive a hard bargain. The club could ward off interest by offering Konsa a new contract, potentially blocking his departure. Reports suggest Konsa is open-minded about his future and has not yet agreed new terms with Villa, leaving the door open for either outcome.
