Aston Villa are set to receive a significant financial boost as they prepare for their UEFA Super Cup showdown against Paris Saint-Germain in Salzburg on Wednesday. The Europa League winners will pocket millions in prize money from UEFA, providing crucial funds as they navigate the closing stages of the transfer window. The financial windfall comes at a pivotal moment as Unai Emery's side look to reinforce their squad following several high-profile departures.
Prize Money and Transfer Funds
UEFA have confirmed that Villa will receive a total purse of £5m (€4.3m) if they win the Super Cup, comprising a £4m participation fee and a £1m victory bonus. Should they lose, the runners-up will take home £4m (€3.4m). Payments to both Villa and PSG will be issued on Friday, 21 August. This injection of cash is substantial but pales in comparison to the sums generated from their European campaigns overall. Villa generated roughly £30m from their successful Europa League run last term, whereas PSG accumulated around £100m from their Champions League triumph.
The incoming money gives Emery vital financial leeway to pursue targets in the closing stages of the transfer window. Villa are anticipated to wrap up a deal for Atletico Madrid left-back Matteo Ruggeri, while Joao Palhinha remains on their radar to cover for the injured Amadou Onana. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Emery said, "In the last weeks of the market players can move. I don't talk about specific players but we all know Palhinha."
Squad Departures and Absences
Villa have sold several key players this summer, including Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for £117m—just two and a half years after Emery asked Villa to pay £8m to take him from Middlesbrough. Midfielder Youri Tielemans, signed on a free transfer, was sold for £35m after establishing himself as one of Emery's key performers. The Spaniard has suffered three previous defeats in the competition—to Real Madrid and Barcelona with Sevilla, and to Chelsea on penalties with Villarreal in Dublin in 2021. His most painful loss came in 2015, when Barcelona beat Sevilla 5-4 after extra time, with Lionel Messi scoring the decisive goal.
Emery addressed the significance of the trophy at his press conference. "Of course it's an opportunity. A trophy is something that can give us a special moment. To play for trophies is as a professional our objective," he said. He acknowledged PSG's status as favourites, describing how he wanted to "get the message across to the dressing room preparing for the match knowing that they feel like favourites. Because of course they are."
The PSG Rematch
Wednesday's fixture marks a repeat of the Champions League quarter-final from earlier in 2024-25. Villa mounted a remarkable comeback in Birmingham, winning 3-2 after trailing 5-1 on aggregate, though they ultimately bowed out 5-4 on aggregate. That night proved Villa could compete with Europe's elite. Gianluigi Donnarumma made three superb saves to prevent Villa from taking the game to extra time, while Willian Pacho blocked Maatsen's goal-bound volley with just 28 seconds remaining.
However, the Villa line-up has undergone drastic changes in the months since that encounter.
