Bardsley insists Hall would represent the "perfect fit" for Michael Carrick's side as they prepare for Champions League football, dismissing other defensive options in favour of the Newcastle defender.

Squad depth required for European campaign

With Manchester United returning to European competition following their Champions League qualification, Bardsley has emphasised the critical importance of bolstering the squad across multiple positions. The former Scotland international identified left-back as a primary area requiring reinforcement, despite Luke Shaw's promising pre-season preparation. Bardsley outlined the club's needs clearly, stating: "There's still time in the transfer window but they need at least one more midfielder someone who is more defensively-minded and another left-back."

Bardsley's primary concern centres on Shaw's well-documented injury history. Whilst acknowledging the England defender's recent form, he expressed significant reservations about his reliability throughout an extended campaign. "Luke Shaw has looked sharp in pre-season but with his injury record you always worry," Bardsley explained. "I don't think you can always rely on him for a full season especially when United are back in the Champions League because of the amount of games they'll have to play."

Hall identified as the perfect defensive solution

Bardsley has identified Lewis Hall as the ideal candidate to reinforce Carrick's defensive options. The former Red Devil believes the Newcastle left-back possesses the exact qualities required to succeed at Old Trafford. "Lewis Hall from Newcastle United would be the perfect fit," Bardsley stated. "It's just a question of getting him out of Newcastle United this summer when they've already sold so many players and lost Eddie Howe. He's a Premier League proven player though and a great age. I think the way he plays suits Manchester United to a tee."

Bardsley highlighted Hall's Premier League experience as a key advantage, suggesting his proven pedigree at the highest level makes him an invaluable prospect for United's demanding schedule across domestic and European competitions. He dismissed Myles Lewis-Skelly as an unsuitable alternative, arguing that the young player is fundamentally better suited to midfield rather than the left-back position United requires. "I prefer Lewis Hall to Myles Lewis-Skelly when you look at what Manchester United need this summer," Bardsley stated. "Hall is better suited to playing left-back. I think if you look at Lewis-Skelly he's a much better player when you play him in midfield and I don't think United need another young player going into the middle of the park. They need a proven defensive midfielder who's got that experience to come in and own that position."

Despite acknowledging Lewis-Skelly's undoubted quality, Bardsley was emphatic about his ultimate choice. "Listen he's a quality player. There's no doubt about it. He won the Premier League last season and started in a Champions League final in midfield," Bardsley conceded. However, he concluded with absolute conviction: "For me if I had to pick between the two of them it's Lewis Hall every day of the week and twice on Sunday."

Newcastle's immovable stance blocks pursuit

Bardsley's recommendation faces a significant practical obstacle. Newcastle United have firmly rejected an initial enquiry from Manchester United regarding a transfer for Lewis Hall. The Magpies have insisted that Hall is "completely unavailable" for transfer this summer, despite suggestions that the player himself was open to joining the Manchester giants. The rejection was delivered nearly two weeks ago, with Newcastle remaining unmoved by any proposal.

Sources indicate the club is actively looking to sign another full-back themselves, meaning they cannot afford to lose one of their own defensive assets. Officials have informed Manchester United's INEOS ownership that the matter remains non-negotiable.

The fee required to alter Newcastle's stance would reportedly be astronomical. It has been suggested that any successful bid would need to significantly exceed the £62 million Premier League record fee for a left-back, which was set when Chelsea signed Marc Cucurella from Brighton in 2022.
