Bristol City 4-1 Newcastle United RECAP as Magpies humiliated in pre-season clash

Newcastle United suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Championship side Bristol City in a pre-season friendly at Ashton Gate on Wednesday evening. The result exposed significant weaknesses in Eddie Howe's squad, with the Magpies missing 11 key players for the clash.

Bristol City's new signing Sam Greenwood opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick that sailed over the wall and struck the underside of the crossbar before finding the net. Fellow new arrival Lorent Tolaj doubled the hosts' advantage before Max Bird made it 3-0. Sven Botman's own goal completed a dismal display.

Harvey Barnes managed a consolation goal for Newcastle, who were backed by more than 3,000 travelling fans at a ground attended by just over 21,500.

Newcastle's injury woes were evident early, with Fabian Schar forced off after just 19 minutes following a challenge with Tolaj. Botman, returning after missing the previous match with Gateshead, struggled throughout and was manhandled by the Bristol City forward. Officials waved away appeals for a penalty before the midfielder scored the own goal.

The defending was particularly poor in the centre of the pitch, with significant gaps opening up between the centre-halves and makeshift right-back Jacob Murphy, who was deployed out of position with teenager Leo Shahar as the only recognised right-back available. The lack of a proper right-back has become a glaring transfer priority for Newcastle.

Bristol City manager Michael Skubala praised his team's intensity. "I thought the intensity in the team, the way we played fast and forward, the way that we got off the back of them, the way we looked a threat whenever we moved it through the structure and the patterns we wanted," he said.

Newcastle head to Spain next week for their training camp in La Manga, with a trip to face Valencia scheduled for the following Saturday.
