Newcastle United stage high level transfer talks over Lucas Bergvall amid Spurs 'offer' truth

Newcastle United have engaged in high-level transfer talks with Tottenham Hotspur over Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall, with Chronicle Live understanding that the 20-year-old was offered to the Magpies as part of Spurs' effort to balance their books after a significant spending spree.
Tottenham, who have splashed out 180 million pounds on Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, became concerned over their outgoings and moved to offload squad players. Newcastle enquired on a price tag with some numbers suggested, though no official bid has been made so far. Conversations between the two boards have taken place, but Newcastle have not agreed a deal yet.
The 20-year-old has told Spurs that he wants to leave the club in search of more game time. The arrivals of Fernandes and Tonali this summer mean Bergvall is likely to fall further down the pecking order at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. There has been no direct communication between manager Roberto De Zerbi and Bergvall over his future.
Nottingham Forest have also emerged as serious contenders, with their 38 million pound bid rejected by Spurs. Newcastle have reportedly tabled a 46 million pound offer, which was also rejected. Tottenham's valuation is thought to be closer to 50 million pounds, and Spurs are hoping to engineer a bidding war between interested parties.
Newcastle are sticking to their valuations on both incoming and outgoing business, and it is believed that Spurs are happy for it to be known that Bergvall is attracting further interest. The midfielder, who signed a new contract in April 2025 with his deal running until 2031, can operate as either a number six or number eight. He made 33 appearances in all competitions last season and has made 78 appearances for Spurs since joining from Swedish club Djurgarden two years ago.
