Commonwealth Games: Wales overpowered by dominant New Zealand

Wales suffered a third defeat of their campaign in a 65-37 loss against a dominant New Zealand. The Silver Ferns raced to a 17-7 lead with goal shooter Martina Salmon scoring 15 goals from 15 shots in the opening quarter, establishing an early dominance that would prove difficult for Wales to match.

At half-time Wales trailed 36-15 with goalkeeper Leah Middleton conceding nine penalties in the opening half. The deficit presented a significant challenge as New Zealand continued to demonstrate their control throughout the first two quarters of the match. The Welsh side faced an uphill battle to try and get back into the contest.

Changes implemented for the third quarter offered some encouragement for Wales. Zoe Matthewman was brought on to make her 25th appearance for the Welsh Feathers for the third quarter alongside wing defence Poppy-Marie Tydeman and the changes had the desired effect. Willed on by the crowd, Wales were resurgent in the third quarter with Georgia Rowe scoring four unanswered goals as they fought back against the New Zealand onslaught.

However, the Kiwi side then showed their class, finishing the quarter with a 51-25 scoreline that demonstrated their superior depth and experience. Again Wales improved in the fourth quarter, showing spirit and determination, but the two-time gold medallists were too strong.

The game ended on a worrying note as New Zealand goalkeeper Catherine Hall left the court on a wheelchair, having appeared to twist her knee in the closing stages.

Wales sit fifth in their group and will face Jamaica in their final pool game on Thursday.
