Liverpool can only make ONE specific signing thanks to Premier League rule
Liverpool's recruitment team is staring down a significant logistical headache during the summer transfer window. Current squad limits mean they have space to register just one more senior non-homegrown player. The Premier League strictly mandates that a maximum of 17 spots within a 25-man senior squad can be allocated to overseas talent.
As things currently stand, the Anfield outfit could easily completely max out their 25-man squad, boasting a breakdown of nine homegrown individuals alongside 16 non-homegrown players. The nine homegrown players currently registered are Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Conor Bradley, Stefan Bajcetic, James McConnell, Vitezslav Jaros, Jeremie Frimpong who qualifies through his time at Manchester City's academy, and Freddie Woodman.
If Liverpool wish to bring in multiple international reinforcements, the club's front office will have to pull off some highly strategic squad management in the coming months. The club's 16 non-homegrown players comprise Alisson Becker, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Virgil van Dijk, Kostas Tsimikas, Milos Kerkez, Wataru Endo, Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexander Isak, Federico Chiesa, Calvin Ramsay, Hugo Ekitike and new arrival Victor Munoz.
However, there is a potential solution. Players classified as under-21s for the 2026-27 season are those born on or after January 1, 2005. These players do not require registration on the senior 25-man squad list, sidestepping the 17-player non-homegrown cap entirely.
This means Liverpool can still purchase as many foreign players as they wish this summer provided those players were born on or after January 1, 2005. The club could additionally still manage to bring in multiple senior foreign players so long as they sell, loan out or de-register players currently occupying those 16 slots. Players including Federico Chiesa, Wataru Endo, Alisson Becker, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Cody Gakpo have all been linked with departures from Anfield this summer, with each departure creating a new available senior non-homegrown slot.
