Jurgen Klopp has emerged as the primary candidate to become Germany manager following the nation's shock exit from the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32. The legendary former Liverpool boss has been urged by German media and supporters to replace Julian Nagelsmann after Paraguay, ranked 31 places below them, knocked Germany out on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

The defeat marks a historic low for German football. It was the first time Germany have lost a penalty shootout at a World Cup. Since winning the trophy in 2014, Germany have failed to win a single knockout game across three subsequent tournaments. German publication BILD ran a remarkable editorial begging Klopp to step in, describing Nagelsmann as petulant, defiant and lacking the ability to mould players into a cohesive unit. Other major publications including Der Spiegel, Focus Online and Welt also called for Klopp to take over.

Berlin-based Welt declared: "This is not just a sporting debacle but the failure of a national coach who couldn't deliver on his promises. It's time for Jurgen Klopp."

The 59-year-old, currently Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull, has left the door open to the role. When asked about the speculation whilst covering the World Cup for German television, Klopp said: "I haven't thought about that yet. I understand that my name is being mentioned now. But it's not the time to talk about that."

Reports suggest Klopp is open to replacing Nagelsmann if the German FA triggers an approach. Managing at a World Cup remains one of his final ambitions, with his sights on either the 2030 finals or Euro 2028. However, any deal would likely require flexible terms, as Klopp is unlikely to want the traditional demands of scouting every weekend.

Nagelsmann has insisted he remains committed to his role, stating: "I am not someone who runs away." His contract runs until 2028, though this offers little protection amid mounting calls for his departure.
