Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge faces a devastating blow as Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust cuts £829,000 in annual funding, leading to the closure of nine inpatient beds from April.
The decision, following a value-for-money assessment, means over 200 patients yearly will lose access to the hospice’s specialized end-of-life care, facing hospital stays instead.
CEO Sharon Allen expressed heartbreak, emphasizing the loss of privacy and expert palliative care.
The hospice, supporting 3,800 patients annually, costs £14m to run, with £8.1m from NHS contracts and £6m from fundraising.
The remaining 12 beds are funded by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Integrated Care System.
Hospice UK’s Toby Porter called the cut devastating amid rising demand, noting 16 other hospices facing similar reductions.
A fundraising campaign has launched to mitigate the impact, highlighting community reliance on these services.
