Kick-off at risk for England World Cup match as 'killer storm' rages causing 'pitch ban'

England's World Cup last-16 fixture against Mexico faced a significant weather threat on Sunday as a severe thunderstorm forced officials to ban all pitch access at the Azteca Stadium. Due to electrical storm protocol, no one was permitted access to the playing surface for health and safety reasons. The stadium issued a shelter-in-place order as the dangerous weather conditions developed, though the match remained scheduled for its original 1am Monday morning kick-off time.
The development prompted urgent warnings from meteorologist John Kettley, who described the situation as "bizarre" given that the fixture had not been rescheduled earlier due to meteorological conditions. Speaking to GB News presenter Dawn Neesom, Kettley explained the dangerous weather pattern: "It is a very bizarre situation really because they often play the matches at midday for obvious reasons. The storms tend to gather as the afternoon heat develops."
Kettley warned of a "very high risk of a storm" at the venue, emphasizing the severity of the weather system. "You can't belittle these storms in Central America. They are pretty violent affairs and they can go on for an hour or two they self-perpetuate. They are 7,200 ft above sea level and it's very humid there so they are proper storm not the little ones we get sometimes in this country," he reported.
There had been earlier uncertainty regarding a potential shift in kick-off time to 6pm BST, originally planned for 1am BST on Monday. However, FIFA subsequently confirmed that Mexico versus England would proceed at the original kick-off time, despite ongoing weather concerns.
BBC presenter Ben Leo reported live from near the stadium, appearing visibly soaked as he warned viewers about the electrical conditions. "Lightning is striking above us. You can hear the roll of the thunder as well sort of making its way through the buildings," he said, cautioning that if lightning strikes were detected within eight miles of the stadium, an instant 30-minute delay would be enforced.
