Labour has come under criticism for a government report suggesting a major shift in British dietary habits to combat climate change.
The report from the Government Office for Science recommends reducing red meat consumption by adopting alternative proteins, including plant-based meat, cultivated meat, and precision fermentation.
However, critics warn this push could extend to promoting edible insects like crickets, mealworms, and grasshoppers.
Estimates indicate that insect protein could represent 11% of global protein consumption by 2054, with a market growth forecasted at 24% by 2029.
Shadow Tory farming minister Robbie Moore accused Ed Miliband of plotting to replace Britain's historic meat-based diet with bugs, calling it 'eco-lunacy.' Academic studies acknowledge the environmental benefits of insect proteins, noting they are low in fat and easier to farm.
Yet, social acceptance remains a challenge, with a low percentage of respondents willing to incorporate insects regularly into diets.
The government report, not official policy but published as a net zero strategy outline, also recommends methane-suppressing feeds, vaccines for cattle, and selective breeding to reduce emissions in agriculture.
The report has sparked political controversy amid ongoing debates about food security and cultural food preferences.
