A Palestinian brewery, Taybeh Brewing Co., located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, has launched a new beer named 'Sun Stone,' which will be sold in 1,600 Co-op stores across the UK.
The family-owned brewery, founded in 1994, partnered with Scottish firm Brewgooder to produce the Mediterranean-style lager, bypassing customs restrictions and soaring costs.
The beer is brewed at zero profit by Brewgooder and Taybeh's own Madees Khoury, who is the region's first and only female brewmaster.
Proceeds from the sales will support Taybeh's local community and the Disasters Emergency Committee's humanitarian work in conflict-affected areas.
Madees Khoury explained that despite the escalating violence and water shortages, the brewery has no choice but to 'keep going.' She mentioned recent attacks by settlers on the brewery's spring, which supplies most of their water, and the challenges of getting raw materials through Israel.
Co-op's decision to stock the beer follows a vote by its members to end trade with Israeli businesses.
Paul Gerrard, Co-op's director of campaigns, public affairs, and policy, expressed pride in selling the beer, stating it is a great initiative to support economic stability and share a different perspective of Palestine.
The brewery, which also provides jobs and a much-needed distraction, tells a story of Palestinian resilience that is not often seen.
Brewgooder's involvement began two years ago after co-founder James Hughes read an article about the brewery and was moved by their story, leading him to propose the collaboration.
