The propulsive three-part true-crime drama 'Death of a Showjumper' explores the tragic death of 21-year-old equestrian Katie Simpson in August 2020.
The documentary, which is set in the scenic equestrian community of Northern Ireland, tells the story of how Simpson's apparent suicide was deeply suspicious to her friends and family.
The series' heroes are journalist Tanya Fowles and detective sergeant James Brannigan, who, despite facing ambivalence and resistance from authorities, relentlessly pursued justice for Simpson.
Fowles' alarm bells rang when she learned that Jonathan Cresswell, the perpetrator of a disturbing domestic abuse case she had covered, was the one who discovered Simpson's body.
She contacted Brannigan, and their collaboration led to Cresswell being put on trial against significant odds, with Brannigan risking his career in the process.
The documentary also features an account from Cresswell's ex-girlfriend, Abigail Lyle, who details the abuse she suffered, proving Cresswell was a 'depraved and dangerous monster'.
It also reveals that after his brief prison stint, locals threw a party for him while Lyle was ostracized, highlighting how domestic violence is often tolerated.
The show concludes on a 'cloud of hopelessness,' as Brannigan quit his job due to frustrations with the case and intimidation, and many aspects of the crime may never be uncovered.
However, the series is praised for being a 'valuable endeavour' that uses the true-crime genre to seek some 'semblance of justice' for Simpson by telling her story comprehensively.
