Sir Keir Starmer new drink-driving rule as he steps down as Prime Minister

Drink-driving laws are set to be made tougher under measures put forward by Keir Starmer's Government. Starmer may be on his way out of Downing Street but his road safety strategy looks set to become law. These include some of the biggest changes to road rules in decades.
The proposals include cutting the drink-drive limit in England and Wales from the current 35 micrograms down to 22. This is the existing threshold in Scotland. This would result in people passing the limit they can legally drive much more quickly if drinking alcohol. People will be encouraged not to drink at all if planning on driving.
Experts say in some cases just one drink - such as a pint of beer or standard glass of wine - could put someone over the reduced limit. That means there is no exact amount of alcohol someone can consume and ensure they stay below the drink-drive limit due to individual factors like age, weight, and metabolism.
The road safety strategy could be among the legacies of Starmer's short time in office. His Government made it a priority to cut the number of deaths and injuries on the roads. These new measures represent a significant effort to advance that objective.
Other proposals include mandatory eyesight tests for over-70s to ensure they are safe to remain behind the wheel. Motorists could also be hit with penalty points for ignoring seatbelt rules. Together, these changes form a comprehensive approach to improving road safety across the nation.
