Thomas Tuchel's worst fears were realised as England's long-standing problem at right-back was brutally exposed in their World Cup round of 32 clash against DR Congo. Brian Cipenga stunned the tournament contenders just seven minutes in, finding the back of the net after a cross was floated to the back post.

England's weakness in that position, where injury forced Tuchel to call up centre-back Trevoh Chalobah to replace the injured Tino Livramento and Reece James, proved immediately costly. Djed Spence was dragged central to cover a run into the box while Noni Madueke failed to track back and Elliot Anderson was caught ball watching in midfield. The shape was dragged desperately out of position as Declan Rice and Harry Kane were seen hammering their team-mates after the goal.

England's frustration grew as they failed to find their feet after falling behind. Jude Bellingham was booked for a rash tackle while passes went astray all over the pitch. The first-half hydration break was greeted by boos from England supporters inside Atlanta Stadium as Tuchel attempted to rally his side. Marcus Rashford saw the best chance of the half blocked on the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka to deny a certain goal.

However, Harry Kane rescued England once again. With 15 minutes remaining, the Bayern Munich star headed in the equaliser before smashing the ball into the roof of the net in the 85th minute to secure a remarkable 2-1 victory.

Joe Cole admitted the performance worried him so much that he contemplated Thomas Tuchel's position, joking he considered appointing Eddie Howe during the disastrous first half. Cole noted Kane and another of England's best players were firing, giving them a chance despite the defensive vulnerabilities, as they prepare to face Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, sitting 2,240 metres above sea level, with the match kicking off at 1am UK time on Monday.
