A PensionBee report reveals the average UK pension pot in 2025 is 21,875, a 9% increase from 2024, but stark gender and regional disparities persist.
Women’s pots average 16,169, up 11%, while men’s reach 25,652, up 9%, narrowing the gender gap slightly.
Lisa Picardo, PensionBee’s chief business officer, noted slow progress in closing this gap, driven by women’s higher likelihood of career breaks or part-time work.
Regionally, London and the South East lead with pots at 25,838 and 27,727, while the North West and Northern Ireland lag at 17,082 and 15,118, respectively.
Projected pots for those in their 30s and 40s rose to 178,439 and 130,140, but under-30s saw a decline to 181,165 due to lower incomes, a trend Picardo called concerning for future reliance on the state pension, worth 11,973 annually.
Women are also less likely to make investment decisions, with 10% abstaining compared to 3% of men.
These findings highlight systemic issues in pension savings, urging reforms to address gender and regional inequalities to ensure better retirement outcomes.
