USA v Belgium tactical analysis: what’s Pochettino’s plan with Balogun available?

Folarin Balogun's dramatic clearance to play in Monday's Round of 16 match against Belgium has fundamentally altered Mauricio Pochettino's tactical approach. After initially being suspended for his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, FIFA invoked Article 27 FDC to overturn the ban, providing the USMNT with their principal goal threat available for their biggest game.
Balogun's availability represents a significant tactical shift. He is markedly different from replacement options, demonstrating confidence, speed and decisiveness in front of goal whilst serving as an initiator of the USMNT's press. As Christian Pulisic noted, "Balo is always available. I feel like when I have the ball when others have the ball he's making runs. He's so strong he's quick and he does a lot of good things."
Pochettino's strategy will focus on disrupting Belgium's possession dominance. Rudi Garcia's side have dominated possession in all four matches, maintaining 57 per cent, yet struggled to maximise that advantage. Their centre-backs, Brandon Mechele and Arthur Theate, defend passively, remaining static rather than winning the ball. Belgium are vulnerable down the flanks when possession is lost.
The USA maintained 58 per cent possession in their four games, matching Belgium's average. Keeping the ball off Belgium's feet more frequently will unsettle Garcia's build-up play. More importantly, the Americans can exploit Belgium's defensive shape through width and quick transitions.
Youri Tielemans bears high responsibility for advancing play towards Kevin De Bruyne, leaving the backline minimally shielded. Senegal nearly beat Belgium using exactly this approach: quick width, early ball to wingers, and overloads created by attacking full-backs.
With Balogun available to lead the press and threaten in front of goal, Pochettino possesses the tactical flexibility to implement a high-risk strategy against a Belgium side forced to adapt at late notice.
