Malvern’s beloved 10-square-metre theatre, known as the world’s smallest commercial theatre, has been given a new lease of life thanks to the efforts of local residents.
Originally created in 1997 by Dennis Neale in what used to be a Victorian toilet, the venue became famous for its intimate puppet shows and quirky atmosphere.
After Neale’s retirement in 2017, the theatre fell into disrepair and was severely damaged by a fire caused by a dehumidifier, leaving the community fearful it would be lost forever.
Spearheaded by creative director Loz Samuels, volunteers raised £17,000 and worked tirelessly to repair the roof, install underfloor heating, rewire the electrics, and replaster the walls.
The theatre’s deep blue walls now feature a stunning gold star constellation sponsored by residents, and its intricate wooden stage frame has been restored to its former glory.
The venue is set to reopen in October with an immersive séance-themed performance called 'Sceptre,' designed specifically for the tiny space.
Future plans include a Narnia-themed Christmas grotto and even wedding ceremonies.
While financial sustainability remains a challenge with just 12 available seats, the team remains optimistic and is encouraging artists and performers with creative ideas to use the space.
Samuels has called the theatre a “magical place” that allows visitors to step outside the modern world and experience something uniquely intimate.
The project’s revival has been widely celebrated as an important preservation of local cultural heritage and proof of what community-led initiatives can achieve.
