A new generation of new towns is set to be unveiled by the Labour Government, marking the latest significant effort to tackle the escalating housing crisis across Britain.
The plans, which reportedly take inspiration from the transformative post-war housing boom orchestrated by Labour prime minister Clement Attlee, outline the development of twelve distinct locations.
The initiative is designed to ultimately deliver up to 300,000 new homes in the coming decades, with each new town guaranteeing a minimum of 10,000 residences.
The Government has pledged that these cutting-edge communities will be supported by ‘first-class’ local amenities, including new GP surgeries, schools, green spaces, and transport links.
Three locations have been prioritised to begin development before the next election: a new settlement in Tempsford, Bedfordshire, located in the heart of the Oxford-Cambridge growth corridor; an expanded development combining Enfield’s Chase Park and Crews Hill to address London’s housing shortage; and a significant new housing project in Leeds’ South Bank.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer championed the scheme, stating, ‘My Labour Government will sweep aside the blockers to get homes built, building the next generation of new towns’ as part of a national renewal effort to restore the ‘dream of home ownership to thousands of families.’ Housing Secretary Steve Reed, delivering a message of ‘Build, baby, build,’ echoed the historical parallel, promising to mobilise the ‘full power of the state’ to create ‘homes fit for families of all shapes and sizes.’ The other nine locations recommended by the New Towns Taskforce include Adlington in Cheshire East, South Gloucestershire across Brabazon and the West Innovation Arc, Heyford Park in Cherwell, inner-city project Manchester Victoria North, Marlcombe East Devon, a renewed town in Milton Keynes, new construction in Plymouth, Thamesmead Greenwich, and building at Worcestershire Parkway Wychavon.
However, the plans were immediately challenged by the Shadow Housing Secretary, who claimed the announcement was ‘yet more over-promising’ from a government already ‘failing on housing.’
