President Donald Trump has called on Israel to immediately halt its aerial bombing campaign against Gaza, arguing that a cessation of hostilities is vital to ensure the safe and quick release of hostages.
Trump’s demand came swiftly after Hamas issued a statement agreeing to proceed with the hostage exchange portion of his 20-point peace plan.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, the President declared, 'Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly.
Right now it’s far too dangerous to do that.' Trump asserted that he believes Hamas is now 'ready for a lasting PEACE' based on their response.
The group's statement confirmed a readiness to release all Israeli hostages, both alive and dead, according to the exchange formula, provided the field conditions for the exchange are met.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office responded early Saturday local time, confirming that Israel was prepared for the implementation of the first stage of Trump’s plan, referring specifically to the release of hostages, but added that Israel remains 'committed to ending the war based on principles it has set out before,' without directly addressing the gaps between their position and Hamas's refusal to disarm.
Trump added that discussions on the details were already in progress, stating, 'This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East.'
