Tens of thousands of Brazilians have taken to the streets in major cities, including Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Brasilia, to protest against any form of amnesty for former president Jair Bolsonaro.
The far-right populist was recently convicted for his role in plotting a coup after losing the 2022 presidential election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The pro-democracy demonstrations were led by some of the country's most celebrated musicians, including songwriters Chico Buarque, Veloso, and Gil, who were prominent figures in the fight against Brazil's military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985.
Veloso, speaking to demonstrators on Rio's Copacabana beach, emphasized that 'democracy in Brazil endures' because the people elected Lula.
The crowd chanted 'Sem anistia' ('No amnesty') as the musicians performed songs from the dictatorship era.
The protests also voiced anger over the 'Bandit's Bill,' a draft legislation approved by the lower house that would make it harder to charge or arrest lawmakers for alleged crimes.
Celebrities like actor Wagner Moura, star of the Netflix drama 'Narcos,' also participated in the rallies, hailing the 'extraordinary moment' for Brazilian democracy after Bolsonaro's historic conviction.
In Sao Paulo, protesters hoisted a giant Brazilian flag as a patriotic response to former US President Donald Trump's unsuccessful attempts to interfere in Bolsonaro's trial.
Demonstrations were also held overseas in cities like London and Berlin.
Buarque, who was exiled during the military dictatorship, stated that granting an amnesty would be a mistake, as it would be a repeat of the 1979 amnesty that left those who committed crimes during the regime unpunished.
