Tottenham strike huge £100m Sandro Tonali transfer agreement

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could reach 100 million pounds. The transfer represents a significant statement of intent from Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi as he seeks to rebuild the club's squad following their narrow escape from Premier League relegation.
The deal is structured as an initial fee of 92.5 million pounds with a further 7.5 million pounds in proposed add-ons based on multiple Champions League qualifications. Newcastle had previously rejected two bids from Tottenham for the 26-year-old Italy international before the clubs eventually reached terms. Despite interest from Manchester City and Arsenal, Tonali chose to join De Zerbi in north London after the manager made the midfielder a crucial summer target.
Personal terms between Tonali and Spurs were never expected to be a problem. The midfielder, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan for 55 million pounds three years ago, was identified as a top priority for De Zerbi's squad overhaul. This transfer breaks Tottenham's previous club record, which was set just days earlier when they secured Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for 85 million pounds.
Tonali's agent Giuseppe Riso indicated that the move aligns with long-standing ambitions, stating that "the goal from the moment he went to England was to try to make him a star player" and that "a club like Newcastle with unlimited financial resources had decided to invest in Sandro. We considered the idea of having the player play in a higher-level league."
Former Newcastle forward Alan Shearer acknowledged the attraction of London and De Zerbi's arrival as potential factors in Tonali's decision, despite recent concerns about Spurs' league position. The deal represents a significant shift in Tottenham's transfer strategy under their new management structure, with the club prepared to make substantial investments to compete at the highest level.
