The legal proceedings in the high-profile assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk have commenced, with the attorney for the suspect, Tyler Robinson, asking for more time to review the 'voluminous' amount of evidence provided by prosecutors.
Robinson, a 22-year-old man, is charged with aggravated murder, and Utah prosecutors have publicly stated their intention to seek the death penalty.
At a brief hearing on Monday, the defence attorney, Kathryn Nester, acknowledged the sheer volume of material provided by the Utah County Attorney’s Office and requested the delay before deciding whether the defence would seek a preliminary hearing, a step that would determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial.
The next hearing has been set for October 30.
Authorities arrested Robinson after he turned himself in at his hometown sheriff’s office in southwest Utah, hours away from the Utah Valley University campus in Orem, the site of the September 10 shooting.
Prosecutors have revealed damning text messages and a note left by Robinson before the shooting.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray told reporters that Robinson’s note for his romantic partner stated he had the ‘opportunity to kill one of the nation’s leading conservative voices and I’m going to take it,’ while a text to his partner allegedly read, ‘I had enough of his hatred.’ Kirk, a close ally of President Trump, was known for steering young voters toward conservatism.
His death has galvanised supporters, who have vowed to continue his mission, with Trump declaring him a ‘martyr for freedom.’
