Emma Heming Willis, the wife of legendary actor Bruce Willis, has publicly defended her decision to live separately from her husband, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2023.
The model and entrepreneur, 47, has been caring for Willis since his family announced in 2022 that he was stepping away from acting due to health issues.
During a special with Diane Sawyer on ABC, Emma revealed that Bruce, 70, is now living in a nearby house with a full-time care team.
She explained that this was a 'heartbreaking' and difficult decision but was made for the sake of their two daughters, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11.
Emma noted that the noise and disruption of a busy family home could agitate Bruce, making it challenging for the girls to have friends over and requiring them to constantly monitor their noise levels.
She emphasized that the separate home is 'filled with love and warmth and care and laughter' and that she and their daughters regularly visit to connect with Bruce.
After the documentary aired, Emma faced criticism online from people who questioned her choice.
She addressed the backlash in an emotional video on social media, explaining that she knew she would face judgment from those with 'an opinion versus people with an actual experience'.
She stressed that caregivers are often judged and criticized by others who do not understand their specific family dynamics or the behavior of the person they are caring for.
Emma concluded by stating that 'if they don't have the experience of this, they don't get a say and they definitely don't get a vote'.
She has used her platform to raise awareness about FTD and connect with other caregivers, not to provide fodder for her critics.
