In Houston, Texas, Leon Gonzalo Jr., 42, has been charged with murder following a tragic incident in which an 11-year-old boy was fatally shot during a doorbell prank, commonly known as 'ding dong ditch'.
The incident occurred late at night when the boy and his friends engaged in the prank, ringing doorbells and fleeing before the homeowner could respond.
According to police, an occupant of one residence came outside and opened fire, striking the boy who was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries the next day.
Police detained and later released a person for questioning at the time of the shooting but subsequently arrested Gonzalo Jr., who resides at the location of the incident.
A preliminary court hearing is scheduled shortly after his arrest.
Authorities stated that the shooting did not appear to be an act of self-defense and that alcohol was ruled out as a factor.
The trend of doorbell pranks gaining notoriety on social media has unfortunately been linked to other fatal incidents nationally.
Officials continue to investigate the case as the community mourns the loss of the young boy.
