A man was shot dead by French police in the southern city of Marseille after he went on a stabbing spree, injuring five people at a hotel and a nearby street.
The man, a Tunisian national who was legally resident in France and known to police, had been evicted from the hotel for unpaid rent.
According to Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone, the suspect returned to the hotel armed with two knives and a baton, where he attacked one person in his old room and then stabbed the hotel manager and his son.
He then went on to a nearby kebab restaurant, where he tried to stab the manager before being chased away by customers.
Police arrived at the scene and, after the man ignored warnings to drop his weapons, they opened fire with a taser and guns, killing him.
One of the victims stabbed at the hotel was in a critical condition, with two others also seriously wounded.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau was scheduled to visit the scene, and Marseille Mayor Benoit Payan expressed his full support for the victims and praised the police for their quick response.
The incident, which took place near the city's Old Port, has raised concerns about public safety and the response of law enforcement to violent events.
The suspect's motive remains under investigation, but authorities confirmed he had ignored repeated warnings from police before being shot.
