After a week dominated by unprecedented heat, forecasters say conditions across the UK are beginning to shift as cooler Atlantic air gradually moves in from the west. The change follows a period of record-breaking temperatures that saw several long-standing June records surpassed by a significant margin.

The Met Office confirmed that the UK experienced three consecutive days of exceptionally high temperatures, culminating on Friday with what is provisionally the hottest June day ever recorded. A temperature of 37.3C was measured at Santon Downham in Suffolk, exceeding the previous June record of 36.7C set at Merryfield in Somerset just one day earlier. Both figures also surpassed the well-known June record established during the summer of 1976 by more than a degree.

Meteorologists noted that such substantial increases are unusual, as temperature records are often broken by only a fraction of a degree. The scale of the new records has prompted further discussion among climate scientists, who have pointed to the influence of human-driven climate change. Researchers said a heatwave of this intensity would have been virtually impossible fifty years ago and warned that extreme heat events are becoming both more frequent and more severe.

Despite the historic temperatures, Saturday is expected to bring the first signs of a change in weather patterns. Parts of the country are moving under a more westerly flow, introducing slightly cooler conditions and increasing the possibility of showers and thunderstorms in some regions.

Forecasters stressed that temperatures will remain warm in many areas, but the exceptional heat that has dominated headlines throughout the week is expected to ease gradually. The transition marks the beginning of a more changeable spell of weather, with localised thunderstorms and fresher air likely to become more prominent as the weekend progresses.
