Two people die after being pulled from sea in Newquay beach tragedy

Two people have died after being pulled from the sea at Fistral Beach in Newquay on Sunday evening. Emergency services responded rapidly to the incident after being alerted around 9:30pm on July 26.

Police were called by the South Western Ambulance Service at around 9:45pm on Sunday 26 July following reports that two people had been recovered from the water at Fistral Beach Newquay. A man and a woman were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police, ambulance crews and the coastguard all attended the scene. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution confirmed that two lifeboats were deployed to the incident. Onlookers reported seeing as many as nine emergency vehicles present while a rescue helicopter was observed circling overhead for an extended period.

HM Coastguard Rescue Teams from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes, along with lifeboats from Newquay RNLI and an HM Coastguard helicopter, were sent to the scene alongside other emergency services. A cordon was put in place at the scene which has since been removed.

In a statement issued on Monday July 27, Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the deaths. A spokesperson said: "Sadly a man and a woman were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their families have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time. A file will be prepared for HM Coroner."

HM Coastguard confirmed it had been responding to an incident in the South Fistral area of Newquay overnight. A spokesperson stated that Coastguard Rescue Teams from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes, lifeboats from Newquay RNLI and an HM Coastguard helicopter were sent to the scene alongside other emergency services following the initial alert around 9:30pm on 26 July.
