Commonwealth Games: Sean McCann, brother of Madeleine, reaches Commonwealth final

Sean McCann, the younger brother of Madeleine McCann, competed for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, reaching the final in the men's 400m freestyle. The 21-year-old Loughborough University student studying chemical engineering emerged for the final at Tollcross Swimming Centre to a huge cheer from the home crowd but finished last in the race, 12 seconds off the pace.

Australia dominated the event with Sam Short claiming gold, Elijah Winnington taking silver and Benjamin Goedemans finishing third. England's James Guy narrowly missed out on bronze after being bumped down to fourth late in the race, with Northern Ireland's Daniel Wiffen coming fifth.

McCann grew up in England but qualifies to compete for Scotland through his father Gerry. He and his twin sister Amelie were two years old when Madeleine, then aged three, went missing during a family holiday in Praia Da Luz, Portugal in 2007. Her disappearance remains one of the world's most high-profile missing person cases, with a Metropolitan Police investigation ongoing nearly two decades later.

His parents Gerry and Kate, along with twin sister Amelie, attended the final at Tollcross Swimming Centre. Kate wore a t-shirt decorated with "Yes Sir I can boogie," referencing the Scottish football anthem. McCann had qualified for the final after finishing fourth in his heat.

The swimmer remains determined to achieve greater things. "The Olympics is always that step even further Being able to represent Scotland is a good stepping stone on the way to that Hopefully a couple more years work I will be in the mix for the Olympics" he said.

McCann will have further opportunities to win a first Commonwealth Games medal as he competes in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events later in the Games.
