Ireland earned their first victory at a Women's T20 World Cup, breaking a run of 21 consecutive defeats spanning five editions of the tournament with a surprise win over semi-final hopefuls West Indies at Bristol.

After disciplined bowling restricted West Indies to 128-7, Ireland chased down their target with 11 balls to spare. Orla Prendergast proved the catalyst with a stunning 63 from 44 balls, striking eight fours and two sixes. Named player of the match, Prendergast reflected on the historic achievement. "It just means so much," she told Sky Sports. "We've had the belief throughout this tournament and it just hadn't come together. There's so much relief to finally have that win and so much happiness."

Spinner Cara Murray was the pick of Ireland's bowlers, returning figures of 2-13 and claiming the crucial wicket of West Indies opener Hayley Matthews for 22. Aimee Maguire also took two wickets as Ireland's fielding proved clinical throughout the match.

West Indies' batting lineup failed to gain traction, with their leading players—Matthews, Stafanie Taylor and Deandra Dottin—all scoring at a strike-rate below 100. Chinelle Henry made 27 not out but it could not compensate for the sluggish start.

In Ireland's run-chase, captain Gaby Lewis fell cheaply, but Amy Hunter steadied proceedings with a 62-run partnership alongside Prendergast. After Prendergast's dismissal in the 16th over with 21 runs still required, Rebecca Stokell held her nerve with an unbeaten 16 to secure the win.

Lewis, recently returned from a leg injury sustained with Lancashire, spoke of the team's journey. "It's been a tough tournament with some close losses and some heavy losses," she said, "but in a tournament like this you just have to dust them off and move on."

The defeat does not eliminate West Indies from the tournament, as they maintain a superior net run-rate compared to Sri Lanka.
