Barbarians 17-34 Wales: New-look Wales end nine-game losing streak

New-look Wales ended a nine-game losing streak with victory over Barbarians at Allianz Stadium, with temperatures reaching 31 degrees Celsius at kick-off. Uncapped wing Amy Williams scored twice, with further tries from makeshift fly-half Kayleigh Powell, scrum-half Seren Lockwood, Courtney Keight and new prospect Jorja Aiono as Wales impressed in the non-cap friendly.
While the result does not improve Wales' record of one victory in their last 15 Tests, they can look ahead to the WXV Global Series in October on the back of a rare success against star-studded opposition. Head coach Sean Lynn seized the opportunity to experiment, selecting 11 players in the matchday squad aged 22 or younger from a squad of 16 aged under 23.
"We wanted to win and to do that with 16 players aged under 23 was really pleasing," Lynn said. "We know we've got a lot to work on but that win is going to build momentum and has given the whole group confidence for pre-season."
Powell received the number 10 jersey with Lleucu George rested and responded with the opening try on 11 minutes. Wales were keen to expand their fly-half options, with Powell showing positive touches during her action at fly-half, though her kicking from hand needed improvement.
Alex Callender and Alisha Joyce both returned from injury and pregnancy respectively, demonstrating the value they bring with impressive breakdown work. Lockwood's storming break eventually led to Wales' second try, while Williams produced an impressive finish for her second score against Canada's World Cup captain Alex Tessier.
The only disappointment came from a late injury to full-back Nel Metcalfe on her return following her absence during the entire Six Nations. The Barbarians lineup featured players from nine different nations, including New Zealand World Cup winner Ruby Tui, though they appeared disjointed in their first fixture since 2024. Barbarians' Amy Rule and Bryony Cleall scored tries in response.
