Gateshead 1-1 Newcastle United LIVE reaction as Magpies held to a draw

Newcastle United were held to a 1-1 draw by National League side Gateshead in their pre-season friendly at the International Stadium, in a match that exposed both the promise of summer signings and defensive vulnerabilities for the Magpies.
The Toon fell behind to an own goal before Lewis Hall equalised in the second half with a finish that came via a deflection off Ben Williams. Despite dominating possession against the non-league opposition, Newcastle could not find a way past Gateshead goalkeeper Adam Desbois, who delivered arguably the man-of-the-match performance for the home side.
Newcastle's summer transfer activity has been significant, with four new signings arriving at St James Park. A player who joined from Monaco has now trained with his teammates for the first time, while Ewen Jaouen and Sean Steur featured in the fixture. An 18-year-old debutant impressed with his technical ability, looking like an established player rather than a first-timer.
Manager Eddie Howe acknowledged the squad's challenges amid reports of further departures. He confirmed that club captain Bruno Guimaraes is due back on 31st July following an extended break, though he could not guarantee the midfielder's future. Speaking about potential interest from Arsenal, Howe stated: "Bruno is the captain of our football club. He's been an unbelievable player and person all through the time that we've worked together. I speak on behalf of everyone at the football club. We absolutely love him and of course everyone would want him to stay."
Howe defended Newcastle's recruitment strategy of signing younger talent, including Bazoumana Toure and Aladji Bamba. He remains supportive of the club's transfer direction despite recent sales of key players. Nick Pope retained the number one jersey after uncertainty about his Newcastle future during the summer.
