Thousands of train passengers suffered major disruption on Tuesday after a herd of cows wandered onto the West Coast Main Line in Staffordshire. The incident was reported at 8.57am near Armitage between Lichfield Trent Valley and Rugeley Trent Valley, blocking one of the UK's busiest railway lines for more than four hours.

The blockage caused significant delays and cancellations for services operated by Avanti West Coast, Lumo, London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway. Cross-border trains between London Euston and Scotland were particularly affected, with passengers warned to expect disruption until at least 4pm. Trains running between Lichfield Trent Valley and Stafford or Stoke-on-Trent faced potential delays of up to two hours, with some services cancelled, diverted or revised. Some West Midlands Railway services between Birmingham International and Rugeley Trent Valley were not running between Hednesford and Rugeley Trent Valley.

A Network Rail spokesperson explained the situation, stating: "At around 9am this morning we received a report of cows on the line near Armitage between Lichfield and Rugeley. This resulted in some train services through the area being delayed and disrupted. Our teams attended the scene and with assistance from farmers were able to resolve the situation around 1pm."

There were difficulties contacting the farmer responsible for the animals. Officials provided tickets on certain alternative routes, including selected Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway and Transport for Wales services, while road transport was also made available.

Affected passengers expressed frustration on social media, with one stating they had been stuck on a train for three hours without movement, while another complained about minimal refreshments provided. Passengers who no longer wished to travel due to delays or cancellations were offered full refunds.
