The construction of East West Rail, the newest major rail line in Britain since the Stockton and Darlington route two centuries ago, is proving to be a complex and disruptive undertaking.
The project, which aims to connect communities along the route with long-lasting infrastructure benefits, has been plagued by unforeseen issues.
Residents, such as Frank Mahon near Winslow, admitted that while they expected disruption, they "never imagined it was going to be as bad as it is and has been over the last six years".
The difficulties of delivering rail projects were acknowledged by Natalie Wheble, the director of engagement at the business, who stressed that the benefits of the infrastructure will last for generations.
The problems extend to travel, with one train journey being delayed by a points failure and stopping short of its destination, where the new line is set to link with the West Coast mainline.
Signs of friction are also visible, with warnings against HS2 construction traffic and failed road surfaces.
The disruption, both political and physical, appears to be a continuing theme, reminding observers that the railway has always been a "disruptor".
