Frome fire RECAP: Huge blaze breaks out next to M&S store as warning issued

A massive fire engulfed a derelict building in Frome on Wednesday afternoon, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky and prompting emergency warnings for residents. The fire broke out shortly before 3pm at the Western Warehouse site on Kingsway in the Saxonvale area, next to the M&S store.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service dispatched multiple appliances to tackle the blaze at the three-storey building. Eight pumping appliances, water carriers, and two aerial ladder platforms were mobilised. Firefighters from stations across the region responded, with neighbouring services from Avon and Dorset and Wiltshire also attending.
The fire service stated the building was fully involved in fire and crews used three main jets to tackle the flames. "Cordons have been put in place due to the structural instability of the building," it said. Residents were urged to keep their doors and windows closed because of the smoke.
No casualties have been reported. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire was extinguished and all crews left the scene by 05:30. The roof had collapsed and the walls were unstable, with the building sustaining 80% fire damage and 100% smoke damage.
The Western Warehouse holds significance as part of Saxonvale's industrial heritage. Mayday Saxonvale, a community group focused on the site's future, said it was absolutely devastated. "Our thoughts are with Damon and Kate the Silk Mill residents neighbouring businesses and local residents who have been affected and with the firefighters tackling this incredibly difficult blaze," the group stated. The site is owned by Somerset Council, though a community-backed group is raising money to redevelop it.
An investigation is under way. Somerset Council said it would be inappropriate to speculate on the cause while thanking emergency services for their response.
