McLaren faced significant controversy at the Italian Grand Prix after employing team orders that forced championship leader Oscar Piastri to surrender his position to teammate Lando Norris.
The incident occurred when Norris, who had been running second for most of the race, lost position to Piastri due to a slow pit stop caused by a wheel gun issue in the final laps.
Team principal Andrea Stella ordered Piastri to let Norris back through, a decision that was met with boos from the Monza crowd when Norris stood on the podium.
Both drivers defended the team's decision, with Norris stating they would 'do what we think is correct as a team no matter what people say' and Piastri calling it a 'fair decision' since Norris had been ahead throughout the race until the pit stop issue.
The result reduced Piastri's championship lead over Norris to 31 points with eight races remaining in the 2025 season.
