Lando Norris has offered a candid assessment of his title rival Max Verstappen, stating that it is ‘almost impossible’ to be as good as the four-time World Champion.
Ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, Norris spoke about Verstappen’s defining characteristic: his consistency.
Norris believes that even on a ‘bad day,’ Verstappen operates at 99 per cent, while he is always at 100 per cent, making him incredibly difficult to beat.
‘He never goes to 101 per cent, but he will always be at 100 per cent and when he has a bad day he is at 99 per cent,’ Norris said, adding, ‘It is hard to beat someone who was born into an F1 seat.’ Norris partially attributes Verstappen's dominance to his racing lineage—his father, Jos Verstappen, competed in F1, and his mother, Sophie Kumpen, had a successful karting career—allowing him to start karting and testing earlier than most rivals.
'I would be a better driver now if I did all of those things.
So people have to catch up because he was made to be in the position he is now,' Norris asserted, while acknowledging that Verstappen is fully capitalising on that advantage.
Despite a recent setback in Azerbaijan where he surrendered an opportunity to gain points on championship leader Oscar Piastri (who he trails by 44 points), Norris remains focused on his own performance, stating he doesn’t read social media or press coverage, choosing to remain 'not too bothered' by the external criticism.
