The Singapore Grand Prix qualifying delivered high drama and controversy as George Russell, despite struggling with illness, outshone his rivals to clinch pole position, setting up what is anticipated to be a thrilling race.
However, the session was marred by F1 World Champion Max Verstappen, who was left furious at McLaren’s Lando Norris, claiming the British driver negatively affected his final sector.
The Dutchman’s frustration was compounded by championship leader Oscar Piastri qualifying third, with Norris starting fifth.
Adding to the chaos, both Alex Albon (Williams) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), who had qualified 12th and 13th respectively, were disqualified from the final results after their cars failed post-session technical checks.
The disqualification stemmed from a breach of F1’s technical regulations concerning rear wings; the FIA technical delegate’s report confirmed that the adjustable positions of the uppermost rear wing element on both cars exceeded the maximum limit of 85mm.
This meant the DRS flap was opening more than permitted, leading to the wiping of their qualifying times and relegation to the back of the grid, with Albon starting 19th and Sainz in 20th.
Russell's pole was a welcome result for the Mercedes driver, who saw his qualifying session interrupted by two red flags, one caused by his own early accident and a second by Liam Lawson hitting the wall.
