Pupils 'in tears' as entire community reels from shock closure of Ruthin School

Students were left in tears and staff devastated by the sudden closure of historic Ruthin School. On July 1, Galaxy Global Education Group announced the closure of the prestigious institution, which has operated since 1284 and was re-established in 1574. The same day saw the announcement of Durham High School's closure.
Staff were given just a few hours notice. More than 100 members of staff have lost their jobs and around 240 pupils now face finding alternative schools. The announcement sent shockwaves through the community, with parents expressing shock and anger at both the decision and the manner of notification.
One parent described the distressing situation: "It's a high surprise to parents like me We found out today at 4pm and I have had a 12-year-old crying her eyes out all evening." Another parent highlighted the lack of advance warning, saying: "The girls were advised to clear their lockers this afternoon They took fees from the families that pay monthly yesterday morning and then sent the letter out about closure a few hours later."
Ruthin School held a prestigious reputation in education. It was recognised as the top independent school in North Wales in The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide 2026 and ranked among the UK's leading boarding schools. An October 2024 Estyn report showed the co-educational institution had 239 pupils, with just over half as boarders and approximately 45 per cent receiving scholarships or bursaries.
Galaxy Global, owned by Chinese businesswoman Shangmei Gao, has attributed the closure to financial pressures including the loss of charitable status, the introduction of 20 per cent VAT in January 2025, removal of business rates relief and rising employment costs.
The closure has prompted community support. Rydal Penrhos School expressed sympathy for affected families, whilst Myddelton College has offered places and support to Ruthin pupils from September. Clwyd MS Darren Millar said he was deeply saddened, stressing the need for clear communication and practical support during the transition.
