WhatsApp users can reserve unique username ahead of major launch

WhatsApp has launched an early reservation system for usernames, allowing the platform's billions of users to secure a unique identifier before the feature rolls out fully later this year.
The new username feature is designed for people who want to join groups and chat with new contacts without revealing their phone number. Instead of sharing personal digits, users will be able to connect using a distinct username to maintain privacy.
"You can reserve a username to use later this year when we launch this feature," WhatsApp confirmed. With over three billion people on the platform, name availability is a significant consideration. "With over three billion people on WhatsApp a lot of names overlap which is why we're opening reservations early so everyone has the opportunity to select the username that matters to them."
For those requiring guidance, WhatsApp has provided a username generator tool. "For most people choosing a WhatsApp username should be something unique that only people you want to contact you will know. If you need help picking one we have a username generator to make one work just for you."
Creators, small businesses, and organisations can link their existing Instagram or Facebook usernames to maintain consistent online presence. "We also know that some people like creators small businesses and organisations may want to maintain a consistent presence online. For them we reserved an option to their existing Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp."
The platform emphasises enhanced privacy protections with usernames. "Usernames are our latest step to make WhatsApp even more private. There's no directory to browse and no suggestions people will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time." An optional username key provides additional control over who can message you.
When the feature launches, users messaging a person or business for the first time will no longer see their phone number if they have enabled their username. Accessing the feature requires navigating to Settings, then Account, and selecting Username.
"We'll be rolling out usernames gradually over the coming months and will notify you in WhatsApp when they're available in your country," WhatsApp stated.
